As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the Canadian economy, buying local is more important than ever before. One industry that has negatively impacted is the alcohol sector, although uniquely compared to many other businesses. The spirits businesses pivoted to hand sanitizers in many cases to assist in battling the pandemic. However, in many areas, certainly in Ontario, we’re starting to see the Province reopen slowly. Now, as wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries have started to shift their focus back, it’s a great time to show some craft-love.

How Local Governments Are Helping

In supporting Ontario’s local alcohol sector, governments are working to:
  • Pause on alcohol taxes
  • Allowing licensed restaurants and bars to provide alcohol as a take-out and delivery option between the hours of 9:00 am and 11:00 pm and at a lower price point
  • Allowing licensed restaurants and bars to create additional outdoor patio space to accommodate visitors and staff once permitted to reopen

How You Can Support Your Favourite Businesses

As the pandemic continues to strike, more and more local shops find themselves going out of business or left without a certain future. Unable to reopen and support staff members, local distilleries are scrambling for options. While it’s important to continue to social distance, there’s no harm in indulging in a wee nip at home in support of your local establishments. Here’s what you can do:

Buy Direct

Before choosing to buy directly from your local distillery, be sure to review your local laws and regulations regarding the pandemic. In most cases, most distilleries are still able to sell from their showrooms, especially as we have been moving from Stage 2 to the recently announced Stage 3 actions to reopen Ontario.

Buy from Delivery Services

As with any purchase, having goods delivered is about as safe as you can be during the pandemic. After all, it’s still important that you prioritize social distancing as much as possible.

Purchase a gift card or other goods

If you’re well-stocked or not much of a drinker, you can always purchase a gift card to send to a friend or to hold onto for later. Not to mention, many distilleries stock a slew of products other than their core line-up. In most shops, you will find paraphernalia and merchandise such as shirts, hats, bitters, keychains, or glasses that you can purchase in support of their business.
In the past few weeks, we have seen more interest in gifting our craft spirit memberships ourselves. A service we’re glad to accommodate!

Advocate for your favourite business

Especially in this technological age, word-of-mouth is still in full force. Encouraging others to support local businesses or calling up legislators yourself can prove a big help to businesses that are at risk of going under during this hard time.

Conclusion

While having a dram at home may be nothing like the thrill of enjoying a drink out with friends, it is the safest option we have yet, even as the Province moves towards re-opening. Like any other, the alcohol sector is chock-full of staff members that still need support and lending them a hand can go a long way.
At Whisky Quarterly Ontario, we help you craft your spirits collection with an incredible selection of products and palettes from around the world.
